Ethnobotanical Use: Also called Sugar Sumac; leaves are astringent; leaves can be powdered and used to sooth skin irritations and mild cuts and scrapes when applied topically, the leaf powder can also be used as a gargle to soothe sore throats, mouth sores, and bleeding gums; steeped beries can also be used to make a cooling drink in hot weather.
