Program Overview: 

Gain new perspectives of health, education, and administration in the bustling capital of San Jose, Costa Rica.  Join Professors Carney & Neuhart as they visit private hospitals, clinics, non-governmental organizations, and senior centers etc.  Experience crash-course medical Spanish, tours of surrounding natural hotspots and come away with new cultural views of your major.

  • Manuel Antonio National Parkpoas volcano
  • Doka, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfalls
  • Guest lectures on health care, social services, epidemiology, and tropical diseases
  • Visits to neighborhood clinics, hospitals, senior homes and local foundations

Academic Calendar:

Academic Focus and Units:

  • For Nursing, earn Community Health Nursing (N445) or Advanced Field Study (N533) hours
  • For HD, complete 3 units of HD 300, Administration

Language of Instruction:

English

Requirements:

  • Class level:  Students with upper-division standing by the end of Fall 2016
  • GPA:  2.75 and above; good academic standing

Housing:

Students will be housed in shared rooms at a local San Jose hotel.  Daily breakfast will be served.

Estimated Cost:

$2,800 + Extended Learning Fees (EL fees of $252 apply to HD 300 students only)

All fees include tuition, room and partial board, welcome/farewell dinners, medical insurance, ground transportation to/from airport and on all field excursions.  Airfare, meals not listed, and personal expenditures are NOT included in the program cost and are estimated at $900.

To Apply:

  1. Attend an information session led by Program Leaders, Amy Carney or Russ Neuhart.
  2. Print out the application materials below.  All application materials must be received by Friday, September 30th along with your non-refundable $300 deposit to the Office of Global Education.   Cash, checks, and money orders made payable to CSUSM preferred for initial deposit.
  3. Final payment is due on Friday, November 4th to the Office of Global Education.  Online payment preferred through CashNet:  https://commerce.cashnet.com/CSUSM_STDYABRD  Please be advised that all payments aside from those via e-check will accrue a 2.75% convenience fee.Payment of tuition related expenses will be billed by Extended Learning to your student accounts following enrollment and will follow payment guidelines set out for Winter Intercession. 
  4. A mandatory pre-departure orientation will be held with your Program Leaders to discuss arrival instructions and the upcoming course(s).  Some course sessions may take place prior to leaving, beginning in December.  More details will follow.
