The Path of the Goddess:  Women and Religion in Ancient Greece

Program Highlights:

Pack your bags for an exciting whirlwhind tour of Ancient Greece and Crete with faculty leader, Dr. Martha Gonzales, as she retraces the importance of goddess culture. The Mediterranean is rich in spiritual traditions steeped in what feminist scholars refer to as "the language of the Goddess", as well as being the meeting ground for many of the world's religions.  Experience the mythology of the Goddess come alive in culture, landscape, caves and temples that honor her many manifestations.

During your time abroad, you will visit:

  • Athens:  Church of the Metamorphosis; Museum of Cycladic Art; Acropolis; Temples of Poseidon and Athena; Porto Rafti; Temple of Demeter; Temple of Aphrodite
  • Crete:  Port of Chania; Chania Archaeological Museum; Heraklion; Knossos; Paliani Convent; Tzermiado; Ancient Plane Tree of Krasi; Dictaean Cave; Gournia; Sitia; Palekastro; Makry Gialos; etc.
  • Delphi:  Sanctuary of Athena; Temple of Apollo; etc.
  • Overnights in Mytilene; Lesvos

Academic Calendar:

May 28 - June 23, 2017

Academic Focus/Units:

WMST 300 (3 units run through Extended Learning).  Will clear upper-division Humanities General Education requirement (CC).

Language of Instruction:

English.  Tours will be led by local tour guides and faculty leader in English.

Requirements:

  • Class level:  Students with upper-division standing by end of Spring 2017 (60 units or more)
  • GPA:  2.75 and above; good academic standing
  • Must be able to sustain long days of exploration on foot and by ferry boat.

Housing:

Upon arrival in Athens, students will be placed in twin shared budget hotel rooms (2 & 3*) throughout their journey in Greece.  Single rooms may be available but will come with a single supplement housing fee.

Program fees:  These fees include airport transfer at arrival, internal one way flight from Heraklion to Athens, in-country group travel, shared rooms, daily breakfast, medical insurance, and entrance to all group excursions.  Th

For 13+ students enrolled:  $3,585

Extended Learning fees:  Estimated at $252

Airfare, meals not listed, and personal expenses are not included but estimated at $1,400.

Please be sure to read the fine print concerning change fees, taxes, luggage restrictions, etc. before booking.  Whenever possible, book directly with an airline.

To Apply:

  1. Attend an information session led by Faculty Leader, Dr. Martha Gonzales.
  2. Print out the application materials below.  All application materials must be received by Wednesday, March 1 along with your non refundable $350 deposit to the Office of Global Education, Administrative 3200.  Only cash, checks or money orders will be accepted for the initial deposit.  Please make checks payable to CSUSM.
  3. Final payment is due Monday, April 10 to the Office of Global Education.  Final payments preferred via CashNet at https://commerce.cashnet.com/CSUSM_STDYABRD Please be advised that all payments aside from those on debit cards (e-checks) will accrue a 2.75% convenience fee.  Cash, checks, and money orders made payable to CSUSM will also be accepted.
  4. A mandatory pre-departure meeting will be held with Dr. Gonzales to discuss arrival instructions and the upcoming course.  Meeting TBD but details will be sent to program participants in advance.
