The CSU Early Start Program

Welcome to California State University, San Marcos! We are thrilled that you have chosen to pursue higher education with us. This page will help explain the Early Start Program on our campus and provide information on how to satisfy your math and/or English Early Start requirements.

URGENT NOTICE: On August 2, 2017, the CSU Chancellor’s Office issued Executive Order 1110, which provides policy changes to the way we serve incoming students. One of the changes eliminates the ELM and EPT exams. The Early Start website at CSUSM will be updated as we receive more information and guidance from the Chancellor’s Office regarding placement measures that will be used Summer 2018.

On November 20, 2017, the CSU Chancellor’s Office issued an Implementation Guidance for Executive Order 1110, which provides multiple measures that will be used for incoming 2018 first time freshman. Multiple measures are divided into four categories.

Who must participate in Early Start?

Math:

Category III STEM majors, and Category IV, all students who have not demonstrated proficiency in math must participate and EAP Conditional students who did not take and pass a CSU approved Senior Year Math Experience course to meet the condition for exemption. 

English:

Category IV, all students who have not demonstrated proficiency in English must participate and EAP Conditional students who did not take and pass a CSU approved senior year English course to meet the condition for exemption.
