Mathematics Placement

Math/Quantitative Reasoning Placement

There are four categories for Math/Quantitative Reasoning:

  • M1-Fulfilled Requirement
  • M2-Enroll in GE Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Course
  • M3-Enroll in Supported GE Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Courses. 
    Participation in Early Start is recommended.
  • M4-Enroll in Supported  Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning Courses. 
    Participation in Early Start is strongly recommended.

All students are highly encouraged to complete their B4 graduation requirement in their first year at CSUSM.
**Please note that your placement category may change when you change your major and/or when your final high school  and college transcripts have been  received and reviewed.**

Math/Quantitative Reasoning Placement for Algebra Intensive Majors*:

* Applied Physics, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Kinesiology-Option in Motion Science, and Mathematics


Starting Fall 2022

  • M1-FULFILLED REQUIREMENT: Student has fulfilled General Education B4 Requirement and is permitted to enroll in the next level of Mathematics as appropriate for major.
  • M2-ENROLL IN GE MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE: Student has met standards, ready to enroll in a B4 level Mathematics  course for the major.
  • M3-ENROLL IN SUPPORTED MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE, EARLY START RECOMMENDED: 
    Fall Placement= MATH 105 and  MATH 005
    or
    Fall Placement= Math 115 after completing ESM 104 and ESM 4 at CSUSM with a grade of "B-" or better for Early Start.
    or
    Fall Placement= Math 125 after completing ESM 105 and ESM 5 with a grade of "C" or better for Early Start. This only applies to majors requiring Math 125/Math 160.
    or
    Fall Placement= Math 132 after completing ESM 105 and ESM 5 with a grade of "C" or better for Early Start. This only applies to majors requiring Math 132.
  • M4-ENROLL IN SUPPORTED MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE, EARLY START REQUIRED:
    Fall Placement= MATH 105 and  MATH 005
    or
    Fall Placement= MATH 115 after completing ESM 104 and ESM 4 at CSUSM with a grade of "B-" or better for Early Start.
Students in following majors:
 
  • Applied Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Business Administration
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Engineering
  • Kinesiology-Option in Motion Science
  • Liberal Studies with an Area of Focus in Math
  • Mathematics
are strongly encouraged to participate in a further placement process to potentially upgrade their placement and shorten their time to degree.  Visit the Calculus Readiness Diagnostic (CRD) website for more information and to see if you qualify.
 

Math/Quantitative Reasoning Placement for Non-Algebra Intensive Majors*:

* American Indian Studies, Anthropology, Child & Adolescent Development, Communication, Criminology & Justice Studies, Environmental Studies, Global Studies, History, Human Development, Kinesiology-Option in Health Science, Liberal Studies, Literature & Writing Studies, Media Studies, Music, Nursing, Political Science, Psychological Science, Social Sciences, Sociology, Spanish, Speech Language Pathology, Visual & Performing Arts, and Women’s Studies.

  • M1-FULFILLED REQUIREMENT: Student has fulfilled General Education B4 Requirement and is permitted to enroll in the next level of Mathematics as appropriate for major.
  • M2-ENROLL IN GE MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE: Student has met standards, ready to enroll in a B4 level Mathematics  course for the major. Check your Degree Planner.
  • M3-ENROLL IN SUPPORTED MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE, EARLY START RECOMMENDED :
    Placement in MATH 101 and  MATH 001. Check your Degree Planner
    or
    Fall Placement for students who have completed ESM 104 and ESM 4 at CSUSM with a grade of "B-" or better for Early Start.
    • MATH 210 for Liberal Studies Majors
    • MATH 101 without Math 1, or MATH 100, or  MATH 105 and MATH 5, or MATH 115 for Arts and Humanities Majors
    • MATH 101 without Math 1, or MATH 100, or MATH 105 and MATH 5, or MATH 115 for Social and Behavorial Sciences Majors
  • M4-ENROLL IN SUPPORTED MATH/QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSE, EARLY START REQUIRED :
    Placement in MATH 101 and  MATH 001. Check your Degree Planner
    or
