Water Conservation

GOAL

Ensure CSUSM continues to meet and/or exceed water reduction measures set forth by the State of California and the CSU*

Green Buildings Icon PROGRESS

We have reduced our water consumption 58% since 2010.  We will continue to reduce per state and water district mandates- which currently are at 25% reduction from 2013 water use levels

*Note: Due to the CA drought, actual percentage reductions in water usage will be changing, therefore, we will work to ensure we are meeting these changes.

Sustainabilty Master Plan for Water Management

Other ways CSUSM is conserving water:

Since 2010, we have reduced our potable water on campus by 58 percent, which equals over 21 million gallons saved. We have done this through a combination of different strategies including:

  • Installation of low-flow faucets
  • Installation of dual flush toilets
  • Waterless urinals
  • Planting drought tolerant and native plants
  • Using recycled water to wash our campus vehicles and equipment
  • Installing a high-tech landscape monitoring system, CalSense, which detects leaks, doesn’t water when it rains and makes monitoring much easier for our landscape crew

Did you know our campus has a water well? This well has reduced our need to use potable drinking water from the city water system, and instead allows us to use our well water to fulfill most of our landscaping needs.  In the coming years, we will continue to seek out ways to reduce water needs for landscaping and our buildings.
