Meal Plan Change/Exemption Information

CSUSM requires a meal plan for all residents living in student housing. The purpose of a Meal Program Change/Exemption Process is to allow students to be exempt from the meal plan, or change their meal plan, based on their unique circumstances.

Change/Exemption requests are accepted until August 1st for the fall semester and January 1st for students beginning their residency in the spring semester. Residents admitted after August 1st will be granted an extension to submit their exemption no later than August 20th.

Exemption Requests for Dietary Needs

  • General Information and Required Documents

Meal Plan exemption requests will only be granted for students with unique dietary restrictions when the Dining Services program cannot meet the needs of a resident, and will not be granted for reasons of non-essential requests or dislikes.

Residents are required to meet (in person or virtually) with the General Manager of Dining Services to discuss and evaluate all of the dining options available.

Students with dietary restrictions must describe their reasons for the request and attach a letter from a licensed physician. CSUSM Corporation and Sodexo will evaluate all change requests.

    Supporting Documentation

    1. A letter from a licensed physician describing the dietary condition/need for the individual. In the event of food intolerance/allergies, the doctor must state specifically which food(s) you cannot consume and/or associated allergy.
