Program Overview

In response to the overarching need to bring an international perspective and deeper understanding of people and their cultures to the classroom, CSUSM now offers courses of study recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization. These courses develop teachers' understanding of the principles and practices associated with the IB PYP, MYP and DP. Students who successfully complete one of these courses of study are eligible to apply and register for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning. The program prepares teachers (K-12) to serve in schools that implement the IB curriculum.

What is IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB encourages students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn, and to participate in community service.

IB Preparation

In order to prepare educators to teach the IB model, CSUSM is authorized to offer the Global Teacher Studies and Preparation: International Baccalaureate Primary, Middle Years Programs and Diploma Program. The course of study is a sequence of four classes, including two academic classes and two field study classes.  The successful completion of this course of study qualifies participants to apply for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning, a certificate that verifies the candidate has completed the comprehensive training to work in an International Baccalaureate PYP, MYP, or DP World School.

This certificate will enable teachers to increase their qualifications and competitiveness in the educational workforce. Our convenient and affordable program, with curriculum offered through online meetings, allows greater access and collaboration with educators.

IB Program Candidates

The candidates for this class are newly credentialed teachers, experienced teachers, teacher leaders, site administrators, teachers already working at IB World Schools, and teachers new to IB.

Please note: Admissions requirements are: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and a Teaching Credential or equivalent. Many teachers working within IB World Schools have never gained or do not hold a current teaching license/qualification, but are expert teachers in their fields. Therefore, the IB now accepts a specified amount of experience as a professional teacher as a replacement for possessing a current teaching license/qualification.  However, students are responsible for locating a school to complete their field study. Please contact your local school for processes and requirements.
