Paid Time Off

Employees receive 14 paid holidays and one personal holiday per year. Employee are entitled to these paid holidays on the day they are observed at CSU San Marcos, unless in non-pay status on the day the holiday is observed.  Paid vacation depends on an employee's position, length of service, classification, and collective bargaining agreement (if applicable).

  • HOLIDAYS
    The following holidays are observed:

    • January 1
    • Third Monday in January (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
    • February 12 (Lincoln's Birthday) - rescheduled and observed in November
    • Third Monday in February (Washington's Birthday) - rescheduled and observed in December
    • March 31 (Cesar Chavez Day)
    • Last Monday in May (Memorial Day)
    • June 19 (Juneteenth)
    • July 4 (Independence Day)
    • First Monday in September (Labor Day)
    • Admission Day - rescheduled and observed in December
    • Second Monday in October (Columbus Day) - rescheduled and observed in December
    • November 11 (Veteran's Day)
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • December 25

     

    Generally, holidays falling on a Saturday will be observed on the preceding Friday. Holidays falling on a Sunday will be observed on the following Monday.

    Annual holiday schedules are posted on the Payroll Website.

  • PERSONAL HOLIDAY
    • Eligible employees shall receive one (1) Personal Holiday per calendar year.
    • The scheduling of the holiday shall be by mutual agreement between the employee and the Appropriate Administrator in accordance with department leave time procedures.
    • The increment of time taken for the Personal Holiday is one (1) full day of an employee's regular work schedule. The Personal Holiday may not be used in hours.
    • The Personal Holiday shall be forfeited if not used by December 31st. This holiday may not be carried over into the next calendar year.
  • VACATION

    The vacation accrual rate in which hours are earned depends on an employee’s position, length of service, classification, and collective bargaining agreement (if applicable). Please refer to the Vacation Accrual Chart for details.  Part-time employees accrue vacation hours on a prorated basis.  Academic year employees do not earn vacation hours.

    A vacation accrual is earned following the completion of a qualifying month of service.  A qualifying month of service consists of 11 days or more of pay in the pay period.  Vacation hours may not be used prior to earning the accrual which occurs on the first day of the following pay period.

    Vacation requests shall be submitted in advance to an employee's supervisor for approval.  Based upon the operational needs of the department, vacations shall be scheduled and taken only as authorized by the appropriate administrator.

    Vacation hours are subject to an annual maximum, please refer to the Vacation Accrual Chart  for details.  Employees may monitor balances by viewing them in PeopleSoft self-service.

    Upon separation, employees are entitled to a lump sum payment of unused vacation hours.
