Credit / No Credit

Grades of CR (Credit) or NC (No Credit) are not included in your GPA calculation; however, you earn the units if a grade of CR is assigned.

For undergraduate courses:

  • Grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C are assigned a grade of CR
  • Grades of C-, D+, D, D-, F are assigned a grade of NC

For graduate courses:

  • Grades of A, A-, B+, B, B are assigned a grade of CR
  • Grades of B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F are assigned a grade of NC

Which classes are eligible?

Please note: no exceptions to the standard policy are in effect for Fall 2021. Credit/No Credit may be requested for eligible classes only, as described by the policy. 

With the exception of language courses taken in fulfillment of the Area C3 requirement, no General Education course taken at Cal State San Marcos may be taken with a CR/NC option. In addition, courses taken to fulfill major or minor requirements are not generally permitted to be taken with a CR/NC grading option (unless offered that way in the class schedule). 

An undergraduate student may elect to take no more than 15 units with a CR/NC grading basis. The following types of classes are eligible for CR/NC grading: 

  • Area C3 General Education classes
  • Electives
